Hi, we republic poly student councilors are here to response on your claims.

Claims: “Both the universities rejected my applications. My GPA was 3.4 and that actually pretty good”

Response: How do you know that with the GPA 3.4 is pretty good? If its good, then why is your application get rejected? Can you provide us the prove that GPA 3.4 is good? Before applying both local universities, did you look at the requirement first? According from the NUS website, in order to be eligible applicant for School of Business, it at least need a minimum of 10th percentile of GPA 3.79 for Business Admin and GPA 3.82 for Business Admin (Accountancy) for NUS.
For NTU , minimum of 10th percentile of GPA 3.73 for Accountancy and GPA 3.73 for Business.
So do you think that having a good GPA is enough to go to universities? You also have to consider you CCA points, CIP hours and also any achievement award that you have in RP. But this is not all, you also have to consider you behaviour in class and your daily grade. Did you get good daily grade everyday? Are your attendance good? Did you absent from school without any valid reason? If not, prove it? Prove it that you are a good student or a role model in RP. The other thing you should look at is, do you think you are the only one to go universities? There are others competitors too that are probably much better than you. So do you think you deserve to go university? Some of other applicant too face the same problem as you and get rejected. Instead of complaining, you should maybe think of any other backup plan like to search on other overseas universities if you have the budget.
Claims: “Applied to the business course in both NTU and NUS.”

Response: Did he check the admission criteria before applying for the course? His GPA was below the recommended GPA to apply. Can he prove that he really applied for both universities? And where is the reason for him getting rejection from the universities.
Claims: The chances of getting into these universities are poor. RP must be really lousy. I don’t think the universities here recognize RP’s diplomas.

Response: The claims that Ryan made are not true. It is not a fact. Firstly, Ryan could not get into either NTU and NUS and he made a statement that RP is a lousy school. Possibilities for Ryan and his friends not getting into NTU is because, they might not have selected to related degree course which NTU requirements had mentioned. Though they had 3.4 gpa which is on a low perecentile of getting to University. But the school mght still accept them depending on the performance. The requirements to get into the NTU course http://www.ntu.edu/ac/admissions.aspThere are other polytechnics with the same result applying for the same course that are not able to get in. These does not mean that RP is a lousy school.

Admission requirement to NTU

Admission Criteria:
General Requirements
You are a Polytechnic Diploma Holder or a Final Year Student from a local polytechnic in Singapore.
  • You should have a relevant diploma from a local polytechnic in Singapore (see List of Acceptable Diplomas below).
  • If you have a Diploma with Merit or Diploma with Distinction, you may apply for any programme in NTU, regardless your diploma.
Claims:
“The chances of getting into these universities are poor. RP must be really lousy. I don’t think the universities here recognize RP’s diplomas. This is what happened when you are the newest polytechnic. They do not take even the award winners.”
The blogger should read claims from credible sources first before coming onto a conclusion.
“This claim is not entirely true, but i agree to some of the blogger claims. RP is indeed a new polytechnic and thus resulted in high cut off points. Entry requirements have shown that 20% of your entry requirement is from GCE ‘O’ level results, this could have affected the blogger acceptance into NTU and NUS.  ‘O’ level results are being used so even though your gpa is good, your ‘O’ levels could affect it.
Another possible reason to the failure would be that Business courses in NTU and NUS have relatively high cut-off points and is above the G.P.A 3.4. This could have resulted in him being unable to enter as he was not in the top 90th percentile of his cohort. Other poly students who scored the same GPA as him will also be unable to enter in the university. Thus, being in RP is not a factor that leads to unsuccessful results.
Lastly, Local Universities also take note of your CCA and other non-academic achievements and award.”

In conclusion, his claims were very harsh due to his disappointments of not going to local universities. His claims also does not supported any evidence to back him up.
